Research overview
SS-31, also known as elamipretide, is a synthetic tetrapeptide (D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH2) from the Szeto-Schiller family that enters cells and concentrates in the inner mitochondrial membrane. There it binds cardiolipin, the phospholipid that shapes the cristae where energy is produced.
By binding cardiolipin, SS-31 prevents cytochrome c from turning into a membrane-damaging peroxidase while keeping its electron-carrying role. It has been studied in ischaemia models and in Barth syndrome, a rare genetic cardiolipin disorder. Typical readouts in cell work are membrane potential, oxygen consumption and ATP levels.
