Research overview
PT-141, or bremelanotide, is a cyclic heptapeptide melanocortin receptor agonist closely related to Melanotan II, from which it was derived. It acts mainly at the MC3 and MC4 receptors in the brain, with less activity at the MC1 receptor that controls pigmentation.
Bremelanotide was approved in the United States in 2019 as a medicine for low sexual desire in premenopausal women. In research it is used to study central melanocortin signalling, especially MC4 receptor pathways in the hypothalamus. Supplied lyophilized as a reference material for receptor research; store it frozen, dry and away from light.
