Research overview
Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist peptide with two amino acid changes from human GLP-1, aminoisobutyric acid at position 8 and arginine at position 34, and a C18 fatty-diacid side chain at lysine 26 that binds serum albumin. These changes protect it from the enzyme DPP-4 and slow its clearance.
Developed at Novo Nordisk, it is one of the best-characterised incretin-based molecules and a standard reference compound in GLP-1 receptor research, often used as the comparator for newer dual and triple agonists.
