Research overview
Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide, Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro, built from tuftsin, a natural immunomodulatory peptide, followed by the stabilising Pro-Gly-Pro tail. It was developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics in Moscow and is studied mainly for anxiety-related behaviour in animal models.
Gene-expression studies in rats found that Selank changed many genes involved in neurotransmission within an hour, in a pattern correlated with GABA, suggesting allosteric modulation of the GABAergic system; other work links it to immune-related genes in the spleen. It has no methionine or cysteine and is fairly robust in storage. See Semax and Selank.
