Research overview
Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide, Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro, developed in Moscow. Its first four residues come from adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), and the Pro-Gly-Pro tail protects it from rapid enzymatic breakdown, without the hormone's effect on the adrenal glands.
In rat studies, a single intranasal application raised hippocampal BDNF protein and trkB activation, linking Semax to neurotrophic signalling and learning-related behaviour. It contains methionine, which oxidises easily, so keep vials sealed, frozen and dark. Semax is also available as a ready-made nasal spray and in a blend with Selank. See Semax and Selank.
