Melanotan II is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide analogue of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH), cyclised by a lactam bridge that makes it far more stable and potent than the natural hormone. It was developed at the University of Arizona.
Unlike the MC1-selective afamelanotide, Melanotan II acts at several melanocortin receptors, including MC1, MC3, MC4 and MC5. That broad profile makes it a reference agonist in melanocortin receptor pharmacology and in research on melanin production, appetite and other MC4-mediated responses. It is not an approved medicine.
