Somatropin is recombinant human growth hormone: a single-chain protein of 191 amino acids, about 22 kDa, with two disulfide bonds, identical in sequence to the main form of pituitary growth hormone. It is labelled in international units (IU), with 1 mg corresponding to about 3 IU.
As a reference material it is used in growth hormone receptor research: binding of one hormone molecule to two receptors triggers JAK2 and STAT5 signalling and IGF-I production in the liver.
