Research overview

AICAR (acadesine, 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide ribonucleoside) is a cell-permeable nucleoside that cells convert into ZMP, a mimic of AMP. ZMP activates AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), the cell's central energy sensor, without changing the cell's actual energy charge.

Since the 1990s AICAR has been the standard laboratory tool for activating AMPK in cells and animals, used in research on glucose uptake, fatty-acid oxidation and mitochondrial biogenesis. ZMP also affects other AMP-sensitive enzymes, so AMPK-independent effects should be ruled out with suitable controls, such as AMPK-deficient cells. Supplied as a powder for biochemical research.

Questions

How does AICAR activate AMPK?

Cells convert it to ZMP, which mimics AMP and switches on AMPK.

Does AICAR act only on AMPK?

No. ZMP can affect other AMP-sensitive enzymes, so good studies include controls for AMPK-independent effects.

What's in the vial?

AICAR at the strength you choose. No diluent or accessories are included.

Can I check the lab report for my vial?

Yes. The batch number on your vial matches a report on this page or in our lab report library, with a link to verify it on the lab's website where available.

Is this product for human use?

No. It's sold for laboratory research use only and isn't for human or veterinary use.
