Research overview

Glutathione is the tripeptide gamma-glutamyl-cysteinyl-glycine, the most abundant low-molecular-weight thiol in cells. Its unusual gamma bond protects it from most peptidases, and its cysteine thiol lets it neutralise reactive oxygen species and act as a cofactor for glutathione peroxidases and glutathione S-transferases.

The ratio of reduced glutathione (GSH) to its oxidised dimer (GSSG) is a standard marker of a cell's redox state. In solution, GSH oxidises to GSSG in air, faster at higher pH and in the presence of metal ions, so prepare solutions fresh, keep them cold and consider degassed buffers. Supplied for redox and biochemical research.

Questions

What is the difference between GSH and GSSG?

GSH is reduced glutathione; GSSG is two glutathione molecules joined by a disulfide bond after oxidation.

Why do glutathione solutions change over time?

The cysteine thiol oxidises in air, turning GSH into GSSG, especially at higher pH or with metal ions present.

What's in the vial?

Glutathione at the strength you choose. No diluent or accessories are included.

Can I check the lab report for my vial?

Yes. The batch number on your vial matches a report on this page or in our lab report library, with a link to verify it on the lab's website where available.

Is this product for human use?

No. It's sold for laboratory research use only and isn't for human or veterinary use.
