Research overview

Each capsule contains 10 mg of methylene blue, a phenothiazine dye, with 60 capsules per bottle. Methylene blue is redox-active: it can accept electrons and pass them on, which allows it to act as an alternative electron carrier in the mitochondrial respiratory chain.

It has a long history as a laboratory stain and as an approved medicine for methaemoglobinaemia, and it also inhibits the enzyme monoamine oxidase A, which matters for study design. In research it is used in work on mitochondrial function and oxidative stress. It strongly colours solutions and surfaces blue, so handle it with care. Keep the bottle closed, cool and dark.

Questions

Why is methylene blue studied in mitochondrial research?

It can carry electrons within the respiratory chain, partly bypassing parts of it, which makes it a tool for studying mitochondrial function.

What should I consider when planning studies?

It also inhibits monoamine oxidase A, which can interact with other compounds that affect serotonin.

What's in the bottle?

Methylene blue capsules, 10 mg at the strength you choose. No diluent or accessories are included.

Can I check the lab report for my bottle?

Yes. The batch number on your bottle matches a report on this page or in our lab report library, with a link to verify it on the lab's website where available.

Is this product for human use?

No. It's sold for laboratory research use only and isn't for human or veterinary use.
